performance studies

performance studies in music indicates a study of performance as research (see Rink 1995; 2002 ). Indeed, most studies are based on a combination of more than two approaches, but roughly six different approaches can be illustrated as below:

(i) music theorists would be interested in discovering the ways in which score analysis informs performance.
(ii) experimental or observational studies of performance would be of interests to music psychologists.
(iii) music performance would be considered as a cultural phenomenon by cultural musicologists.
(iv) computational musicologists would take investigations of performance itself as analysis.
(v) in music education research, developmental issues of performance would be considered significant.
(vi) a re-creation of historically informed style would be a significant aspect to historical musicologists.

  • cello (the most expensive thing that I own)
  • an inspirational book

on my iPod

  • 12 different versions of Brahms' cello sonatas (for a research purpose)
  • Beethoven's triple concerto (gorgeous stuff)
  • Kodaly's violin-cello duet (gotta be aware of other interpretations)

stuff I like

  • favourite artist: It's difficult to single out between the cellist Yo-Yo Ma and the violinist Joshua Bell .
  • I like art galleries. Although it didn't feel like a fun-day-out when mother used to drag us there as kids, I now feel that getting reminded of incredible artistic sense once in a while is pretty awesome! I have a thing about paintings by French impressionists, Monet and Renoir, so Orsay Museum in Paris is my kind place!
  • I am a bit of foodie. I love pasta with any sauce (even an experimental sort), but oddly enough, I am no longer keen on pizza. I also have a thing about seafood of all kinds, including sashimi!
  • favourite season: autumn (harvest season)
  • favourite TV prog: Numb3rs
